The Chapel Choir of the Royal Hospital Chelsea gives its annual November concert in the sumptuous surrounds of Christopher Wren’s 1692 Chapel. The ticket price includes a glass of wine or soft drink in the Great Hall during the interval.

Haydn’s Missa in Angustiis (Mass for Troubled Times), was premiered shortly after Horatio Nelson’s stunning victory in the Battle of the Nile in August 1798. Thence known as his Nelson Mass, it is “arguably Haydn’s greatest single composition”, according to his chief biographer H. C. Robbins. Tonight’s concert features the complete mass interwoven with some of the finest Romantic Austro-German motets by Brahms, Bruckner, Haydn himself, Mendelssohn and Rheinberger.

Mendelssohn’s Hear my Prayer features the celebrated solo O, for the wings of a dove and we conclude the evening with Haydn’s wonderfully rousing chorus The Heavens are telling the Glory of God from The Creation.

All soloists are members of the renowned and critically acclaimed Chapel Choir of the Royal Hospital Chelsea.
