For its 15th concert in support of Freedom from Torture, The Doctors’ Orchestra is joined by four stellar horn soloists drawn from London’s top orchestras to play Schumann’s rarely heard but thrilling Konzertstück. Schumann exploited the possibilities of the newly introduced valve horn to the full in this unusual piece, writing music which challenges the very best players to this day and creates a splendid effect.
The concert starts with music Berlioz drew from his opera Benvenuto Cellini, opening with the theme of the love duet between the two principal characters but soon progressing to a depiction of the hectic, sometimes violent, celebration of Carnival in Renaissance Rome.
The concert concludes with Sibelius’ magnificent Second Symphony, full of characteristic lyricism, light and shade, that concludes with the most radiant D-major chord ever written.
Duration: approx. 2 hours 15 mins (incl. interval)
