Stephanie Gonley violin/director

With Stephanie Gonley (the ECO’s leader since 1991) directing from the violin, this is a concert that’s been designed to show the ECO at its very best: chamber music on the most all-embracing scale. Bartók’s Divertimento is one of the 20th century’s greatest masterpieces for strings: a premonition of the Second World War, charged with a fierce, burning vitality that simply won’t roll over and be polite. Suk’s Serenade comes from a happier world: a song of summer, drenched in romantic melody and glowing with Bohemian sunshine. In other words, exactly what you’d hope for from Dvořák’s favourite pupil.

In between, Stephanie steps into the spotlight, as soloist not just in the teenage Mendelssohn’s surprisingly dramatic ‘other’ violin concerto, but also in Schubert’s deliciously tuneful and virtuosic Rondo.
