London Phoenix Orchestra brings light music and jazz to Cadogan for the final concert of its season.
Fifty years after his death, master of light music Leroy Anderson’s charming Piano Concerto receives a rare performance, with Phillip Leslie as the soloist.
For Duke Ellington, music existed “beyond category”. Left unfinished at his death, his Three Black Kings was intended as a eulogy to Martin Luther King and brings jazz and gospel to the orchestra which he regarded as “an expensive toy”.
Shostakovich’s Suite For Variety Orchestra (often known erroneously as Jazz Suite No. 2) is best known for the waltz which was used in Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut.
Short gems by Gershwin and Anderson complete the programme.
Duration: approx. 2 hours (incl. interval)
