A true musical legend, Ralph performs classics from his illustrious six-decade career, armed simply with his songs, his guitar, and his stories.
The unassuming singer-songwriter is a prolific touring and recording artist with a skill for illuminating the present through his strong connection to a shared, storied past. McTell has always forged his own artistic path. His work is a harmonious juxtaposition of melodies and words of a quintessentially British and Irish focus, played in a style inspired by his love of the great Delta blues players of the American South. Ralph’s occasional dazzling and dextrous guitar instrumentals display a lesser-known side of his repertoire.
A gifted and natural raconteur, McTell also reflects on his life stories to enraptured audiences. These include hitchhiking with Rod (then known as the Mod) Stewart, playing the Isle of Wight Festival alongside Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone, playing a crap game with Tom Waits in LA, the history of ‘the song’ that led to an Ivor Novello award, and numerous tales that inspired the songs which have led to a shelf-full of awards.
Audiences worldwide still flock to hear and sing along to the timeless classic that catapulted him to global fame. Fondly abbreviated to ‘Streets’, the song’s melodic beauty and cold, hard truth keep it forever relevant.
But with a treasure trove of more than 60 years of writing, audiences are rewarded with a panoply of music that bears witness to the reflections, observations and nuanced philosophy of a master craftsman who magically weaves an evening of music that measures his life’s work. Prepare to be spellbound!
