2021 was the centenary of both Malcolm Arnold and Ruth Gipps, and this postponed programme celebrates them both, beginning with Gipps’ delightful Song for Orchestra. Arnold’s unjustly neglected Cello Concerto is one of his later works and is dedicated to Julian Lloyd Weber.
Dan Brandon is a former SYO Principal Cello, and we are delighted to welcome him back to appear as a soloist in this compelling and intriguing work.
The concert ends with Sibelius’ ever-popular Second Symphony, written in 1902. It initially divided the critics but is appreciated today as a treasure of the symphonic repertoire.
