It’s not often that rivalry between Renaissance composers is told, but this surely must have been the case in 1556 when Orlandus Lassus was appointed Kapellmeister at the court in Munich, over the head of the incumbent Ludwig Daser.
Lassus, of course, was celebrated for good reason, but before he was overshadowed, Daser was one of the most respected musicians of the period. Was his eclipse justified, or was he a genius in the right place at the wrong time.
The Tallis Scholars’ programme, which includes major works by both Daser and Lassus, should give an answer. And maybe a new star will be born.
Celebrating their 50th anniversary this season, the peerless Tallis Scholars are at the very height of their powers, winning both the Recording of the Year and the Choral Award in BBC Music Magazine last year.
