The David Gordon Trio is one of the most innovative jazz trios working today. Filling a vast landscape their music is as likely to plug into bebop, Argentinian zamba, Bach paraphrase or a nursery rhyme as it is to inhabit something more typical of contemporary jazz. Theirs is music existing across boundaries and across time and includes original tunes that have become standards in their own right. David’s Angel Feet is featured in Sher Music’s The European Fake Book.
With its unabashed love of melody, underpinned by grooves deep and light, the trio’s music always speaks to the listener and never fails to delight.
An assured and versatile pianist, David Gordon is one of the few professional jazz musicians who is also a well-established classical artist. An accomplished harpsichordist as well as pianist, David includes work as soloist/director with the likes of the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra, London Chamber Orchestra and Helsinki Philharmonic. 2024 saw appearances in chamber format with violinist Daniel Pioro at the Aldeburgh Festival and BBC Proms.
As an award-winning composer he is commissioned by festivals, orchestras and fellow musicians alike. As a jazz pianist he has a repertoire that focuses on original compositions by the band but also includes material as diverse as folk music from Venezuela, tango from Finland and Celtic-tinged melodies.
The trio is rounded out with the outstanding Oli Hayhurst on bass and fearsome Tom Hooper on drums. They all have a deep understanding and a unity of purpose. David is a world-class talent with a playful sense of humour, which makes all his shows both musically innovative and a lot of fun.
Following the widespread acclaim received for the trio’s captivating project, Alexander Scriabin’s Ragtime Band, hailed as “one of the finest trio records I have heard in a very long time” by Stereopluss in Norway, and recognized as MOJO‘s Jazz CD of the Year, their newest endeavour, Pachyderm, signals a return to the group’s roots with original compositions. This latest work is characterized by subtle nods to Bach and the baroque era.
“Gordon… a richly gifted player with a sparkling style and boundless imagination” (Independent on Sunday)
“He doesn’t play many notes, but the notes that he does play are almost the selection of a genius” (Jazz FM)
“One of our most brilliant pianists … festival organisers both classical and jazz should be grabbing these guys with both hands” (London Jazz News)
“David Gordon has the wonderful ability to make piano notes glisten like precious drops of water” (John Etheridge, Musician)
