On 29th May 1913, Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes presented the premiere of a new ballet by Igor Stravinsky in Paris. Billed as a Portrait of Pagan Russia, The Rite of Spring sat at the heart of a very traditional evening of popular favourites. Few in the audience had a clue what they were about to experience.

The music caused a riot in the theatre, with abuse shouted at the composer and performers, and other audience members hailing the new piece as a work of genius. Later that evening would be hailed as the birth of Modernism.
