Roberto Fonseca & Vincent Segal
- BOOKING OPENS FRIDAY 17 JULY, 10AM.
Pianist Roberto Fonseca and cellist Vincent Segal move effortlessly between contemporary, electronic, jazz and world music, creating an intimate, genre-blurring dialogue.
Fonseca, first known through Buena Vista Social Club, has collaborated with Herbie Hancock, Esperanza Spalding, Ibrahim Maalouf, Fatoumata Diawara, C. Tangana and Damon Albarn, and is Grammy-nominated and a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Segal, a Victoires du Jazz winner, has worked with Cesaria Evora, Vanessa Paradis, Ballaké Cissoko, Matthieu Chedid and Glenn Ferris.
Together, they earned a 2026 Cubadisco Award for Nuit parisienne à La Havane.
Their new project turns from the sensual energy of the album La Gran Diversión towards something more reflective and personal. Much of the music was shaped in advance, but in the studio, they allow improvisation to capture the moment, resulting in a dialogue that feels both spontaneous and carefully honed.
Segal traces this partnership back almost 20 years, to solo performances at Rome’s Palazzo Farnese, and later appearances at the Vannes and Biarritz festivals. Each meeting revealed Fonseca’s balance of ease and deep focus, and helped Segal rediscover the classical cello of his childhood, now opened up by rhythm, improvisation and space. In the studio, that connection deepens: the music seems to invite its own images, as if the notes themselves are writing the scenes.
This project rewards careful listening. Think of Keith Jarrett’s Köln Concert: close the door, take your time, and let this delicate, spontaneous and insightful conversation between piano and cello unfold.
