In this show jazz, trumpet ace Paul Higgs presents an afternoon of music in the Cool Jazz style. Characterised by a relaxed mood, the style is known for its emphasis on melody, structure and counter-point.

Paul plays tunes by the giants of Cool Jazz – Chet Baker, Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, Shorty Rogers, Gerry Mulligan, Stan Getz, the Modern Jazz Quartet and Lester Young, amongst others. Paul and his band will be playing these classics, with some narrative background woven throughout.

Paul was a Musical Director at the National Theatre and the RSC, and has performed with Sir Peter Maxwell Davis, the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Johnny Dankworth, Lulu, Tony Hatch, John Williams, and Nancy Wilson. He has also performed in major concert venues around the world, such as the Royal Festival Hall, Berlin Concert Hall, Royal Albert Hall, and Ronnie Scott’s.

Paul is renowned for his magical sound and exceptional skill. His great sensitivity, high energy and his own skill as a composer make him a joy to hear.

‘I’ve never been sure if I’m a bigger fan of Paul’s trumpet playing or his marvellous composing talents as they’re both monumental! Paul Higgs is a world-class composer and trumpet player.’ (Digby Fairweather, BBC presenter & jazz trumpeter)

‘Higgs is a trumpeter of rare talent – his sublime blowing alternately raising the roof, lazily soothing with deft control of his battered mute and tingling the spine.’ (Tim Hughes, The Oxford Times)

Duration: 2 hours (incl 30-minute interval)
