Paul Higgs presents an evening of music by Louis Armstrong. Louis was probably the most influential jazz musician of all time. His personality as well as his musical ability helped popularise jazz as well as break down racial barriers.
Paul plays tunes such as When It’s Sleepy Time Down South, Indiana, Cornet Chop Suey, Jeepers Creepers, What A Wonderful World, Strutting With Some Barbecue, Black and Blue, and Georgia, amongst others.
Paul was a Musical Director at the National Theatre and the RSC, and has performed with Sir Peter Maxwell Davis, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Johnny Dankworth, Lulu, Tony Hatch, John Williams, and Nancy Wilson. He has also performed in major concert venues around the world such as the Royal Festival Hall, Berlin Concert Hall, Royal Albert Hall, Ronnie Scott’s, and The Stables, as well as Cadogan Hall’s Culford Room.
Paul is renowned for his magical sound and exceptional skill. His great sensitivity, high energy and his own skill as a composer make him a joy to hear.

Paul Higgs, trumpet
Paul Higgs is renowned as one of the UK’s leading trumpet players and composers. He has had an extensive musical career in many fields, including performing, composing and arranging music for film, TV and theatre. In the early part of his career, he was a leading performer and composer in NYJO, then became a Musical Director for the National Theatre and Royal Shakespeare Company, where he stayed for many years. He has performed with luminaries including Sir Peter Maxwell Davis, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Johnny Dankworth, Rosemary Clooney, Lulu, Tony Hatch, John Williams, Nancy Wilson and Shorty Rodgers.
He has performed in major concert venues around the world, such as the Royal Festival Hall, the Schubert Theatre (USA), Berlin Concert Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, The Stables and Ronnie Scott’s and is frequently to be seen performing in jazz clubs around the country.
Gabriel Keen, piano
Gabriel Keen was classically trained at Dartington College of Arts and the London College of Music. He was a prizewinner in the fifth British Contemporary Piano Competition and has recently recorded works by contemporary composer Brian Inglis for a CD release. He was resident pianist at Kensington Palace Hotel and plays occasionally at Grosvenor House Hotel.
He has played with Hot Orange Big Band, London Swingfonia and Denmark Street Big Band and is a member of soul band The Fabulations, classic fusion band The Weatherheads, vintage swing band Radio Nights Orchestra, 10-piece jazz band Little Big Horn, the Bee Ororo band, and one of the current line-ups of the 80s pop band, Imagination featuring Errol Kennedy. He is an accompanist for jazz, pop and opera singing classes at the City Lit in London.
Jerome Davies, double bass
Jerome Davies studied trumpet and double bass at Trinity College of Music in London, where he was the recipient of several prizes. He has performed with diverse artists including Kenny Wheeler, Jim Mullen, Alison Moyet, Kenneth Alwyn, Simon Warner and Salena Jones. He has toured extensively in France, Austria, Monaco, the United Arab Emirates, Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic, and at the Blue Note Club in New York.
Jerome is also busy as an arranger and composer of both jazz and classical music. Classical compositions include a string quartet, a song cycle for soprano and piano of Shakespeare settings and incidental music for a production of Bow Down.
Neil Bullock, drums
Neil was a member of the Midland Youth Jazz Orchestra (MYJO), which he left at the age of 21 after appearing at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Following a meeting with Danny Gottlieb (Pat Metheny), Neil went to New Jersey to study with Dave Brubeck’s world-renowned drummer, Joe Morello, and also studied privately with Jim Chapin.
Neil joined The Red Lemon Electric Blues Band at a young age and went on to tour with Chuck Berry, played shows as support to Robert Plant and made a record number of appearances at Ronnie Scott’s. Over the last few years Neil has worked on numerous occasions with the BBC Big Band both live and on the radio. Neil performed in ‘The World’s Greatest Drummer’, a tribute to Buddy Rich, and was also the featured drummer at ‘A Night to Remember’, a tribute to Ronnie Verrell.
