An evening of some of the most cherished choral music.
Vaughan Williams said that his Five Variants of Dives and Lazarus were ‘reminiscences’ of timeless folksongs from his childhood and the three French works in tonight’s programme also find the composers in contemplative moods. We hear a reflection on the past, a request for guidance from God and a peaceful, serene Requiem for the dead.
Also looking to a place beyond time and space, Vaughan Williams’ Toward the Unkown Region is a soaring setting of a visionary poem by Walt Whitman.
Promoted in association with the City of London Choir.
Duration: approx. 1 hour 50 mins (incl. interval)
