Sarah Jane Morris is a singer-songwriter with a back catalogue of 15 solo albums since establishing herself as a lead vocalist in the 1980s with bands such as The Republic, Happy End and The Communards.
‘Don’t Leave Me This Way’ was a worldwide hit in 1986 in which Sarah Jane, with her powerful tenor/baritone range, duetted with Jimmy Somerville and his agile falsetto.
The Sisterhood is her latest project. It is about ten female singer-songwriters having influenced and impressed the most and to whom Sarah Jane owes debts of example: Bessie Smith, Billie Holliday, Nina Simone, Miriam Makeba, Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin, Joni Mitchell, Rickie Lee Jones, Annie Lennox and Kate Bush.
Sarah Jane has written a song to tell each singer’s story, using words and musical form reflecting the writing style and musical idiom associated with each woman-artist-hero.
In conception and execution, Sarah Jane’s project is extremely ambitious, demanding a degree of musical literacy and versatility which make The Sisterhood rich in musical history and stylistic range.
Sarah Jane acknowledges the creative hand of her guitar player, legendary axman Tony Rémy, co-writer and co-producer of these ten songs, and her narrative provides a 21st-century coda to the story of song, as told in the lives and the minds of women.
Be part of this timeless voyage. Be part of ‘The Sisterhood’.
