The Würth Philharmonic, named after the German philanthropist Prof. Dr Reinhold Würth, brings together some of the world’s most talented young musicians to form a virtuosic symphony orchestra performing with today’s greatest conductors and soloists. For its Cadogan Hall debut the orchestra is conducted by Rumon Gamba.
The evening’s programme of masterpieces begins with Vaughan Williams Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, a visionary fusion of folksong and sacred music, followed by Rachmaninov’s much-loved Second Piano Concerto, performed by one of Britain’s leading pianists, John Lill.
The concert ends with Elgar’s most beloved work, his Enigma Variations where he draws a series of affectionate portraits of his family and friends. The central Nimrod variation has almost become an instantly recognisable second national anthem.
