Schubert’s magnificent and rarely-performed final Mass was composed in 1828, just before his tragically early death. The setting is on a vast scale – principally choral, with the orchestral colour dominated by woodwinds, brass and timpani.

The symphony was begun six years earlier; although unfinished, its two movements are complete in themselves as the sublime second movement resolves the tensions of the first. Both works combine Schubert’s mastery of classical structure with his own gift for lyricism but also include astonishing harmonies in the early Romantic style.

Mendelssohn’s anthem is a graceful prayer for peace strongly influenced by Bach.
