ICS at Holy Trinity Church explores one of the towering figures of the Classical period, contrasting the dramatic and tormented motet Insanae et vanae curae with the tranquil and serene setting of the Salve Regina. The programme culminates with the mighty Nelson Mass.
Haydn’s choral masterpiece, the Nelson Mass (Missa in Angustiis), was attributed to Lord Nelson following the defeat of Napoleon at the 1798 Battle of the Nile. It is remarkable for its fiercely dramatic Kyrie and Benedictus movements, with a relentless energy and celebratory mood permeating all the movements.
The contrasts of the first half highlight Haydn’s extraordinary ability to create atmosphere and drama. From the tormented opening motet, Insanae et vanae curae, scored for full orchestra and chorus, through to the beautiful serenity of the Salve Regina and its virtuosic writing for soprano solo, there is music to appeal to all tastes. Islington Choral Society is joined by the critically-acclaimed professional forces of the Orchestra of the London Choral Sinfonia and a world-class line-up of soloists, conducted by Michael Waldron.
