Mendelssohn’s Elijah is one of the masterpieces of the choral repertoire. First performed in English in Birmingham in 1846, and a triumph at its premiere, the oratorio has been a favourite of British audiences ever since.

The work presents episodes from the life of the prophet of the same name, and draws on texts from throughout the Old Testament. Audiences have always responded to Mendelssohn’s keen sense of drama and, of course, the extraordinary quality of the music. Elijah shows one of the finest composers from the classical tradition working at the height of his powers.
