Here is where it all began. Verdi’s first staged opera set in place so many of the themes that would define his future output: infidelity, confrontations, a flawed but loving father, and an overarching sense of political weight to the drama.

Oberto’s daughter Leonora has been seduced and abandoned by one of his enemies, Riccardo, and their attempt to disrupt the wedding to his new betrothed Cuniza eventually leads to a fatal duel. Drawing on tragic models by predecessors such as Rossini, Donizetti, and Bellini, Verdi was nonetheless already forging a distinct voice of his own.

Now a rarity on the stage, we are delighted to be joined by an outstanding cast including Stephan Loges, Anush Hovhannisyan and Carolyn Dobbin as Riccardo’s two lovers, and Matthew Scott Rogers at the helm.
