Weber’s Der Freischütz is the rock on which the mansion of German opera is built, inspiring generations of composers who wanted to tell national folk tales and myths in their work. The Wolf’s Glen scene brought Gothic horror to the stage and created a sensation in 19th-century Europe.
It is now only rarely performed in the UK, making this evening an exciting opportunity for opera lovers to hear Weber’s gorgeous and evocative music.
We are delighted to welcome Peter Selwyn, one of the UK’s most experienced opera conductors, for his company debut. The performance features English-language narration by the legendary opera translator, Amanda Holden, and we are thrilled to be joined by BBC Radio 3’s Petroc Trelawny to read it.
Concert performance sung in German with English surtitles.
5.45pm: Pre-concert talk
With Dr Barbara Eichner (concert ticket holders only).
Duration: approx. 2 hours (incl. interval)
