Exactly 100 years from its first public performance singing this very piece, Twickenham Choral kicks off its centenary celebrations with Mendelssohn’s ever-popular masterpiece.
Never out of fashion, this intense, operatic biblical oratorio vividly depicts Elijah’s confrontations with the priests of Baal, King Ahab, Queen Jezebel and even God himself, climaxing in his whirlwind ascent to heaven in a fiery horse-drawn chariot.
For imaginative orchestration, flamboyant characterization, dramatic impetus and sheer beauty of the music, Elijah is justifiably an absolute favourite of the choral repertoire for singers and audience alike.
