A profoundly moving major new work by Susannah Self, who is fast emerging as one of the most accomplished composers of choral music in the UK. Her beautiful and accessible music has been enjoyed by audiences over many years, earning rapturous reviews. Drawing from many sources, this full-length oratorio unifies them with a simplicity and directness which is uplifting and inspiring.

Celebrated soprano Nadine Benjamin MBE and superb Welsh baritone Alex Jones join North Sea Voices and Orchestra, top chamber choir Ely Collegium, two youth choirs and guest choirs from Norfolk to perform this exceptional world premiere.

“I felt it was time to compose an oratorio that would embrace all the positive aspects of the major religions and philosophies of the world. Therefore, Song of the Golden Flower is a sacred-secular oratorio presenting a positive perspective that resonates and unifies. I interface the ancient Chinese text of The Secret of the Golden Flower with texts from Hinduism, Carl Jung, Emily Dickinson, ancient text from The Descent of Inanna, Julian of Norwich, Saint Teresa of Avila, and an extract from the Gospel of Mary Magdalene, as well as other sources. I also incorporate traditional religious texts such as the Christian Magnum Mysterium, and a Jewish prayer.” Susannah Self

“The lasting impact of Susannah Self’s Gloria was of a vibrant, vividly scored work that convincingly counterpoised buoyant exaltation with more intimate and thoughtful examples of thanksgiving.” Seen & Heard International, 2026
