For the finale of this all-Beethoven series marking 200 years since the composer’s death, Daniel Hyde conducts the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the City of London Choir in a performance of one of the composer’s last works, the majestic, monumental Missa Solemnis.

One of Beethoven’s last works, it is generally considered one of his supreme achievements – acknowledged by the composer himself, who inscribed the score “From the heart – may it return to the heart!”

Missa Solemnis was written during an extended period of war and cultural instability, soon after Napoleon’s defeat, and at a time of personal difficulty as Beethoven confronted increasing deafness and the end of his performing career, as well as the death of his brother. Always within an orderly framework, the music nevertheless expresses vividly the turmoil and deep emotion those circumstances elicited, and the profound spirituality they tested. The Mass culminates in a powerful, timeless cry for peace.
