Cadogan Hall today announces the 2023-24 season of its Zurich International Orchestra Series, featuring eleven orchestras from across the globe and a host of soloists. The series forms part of the Hall’s celebrations of its 20^th anniversary, celebrating two decades of presenting world-class music to audiences in London.

Concerto Budapest Symphony Orchestra

After its debut tour of the UK in 2022, the Concerto Budapest Symphony Orchestra with conductor Andras Keller return to Cadogan Hall to open the Zurich International Orchestra Series. Reflecting on homeland and legacy, the Orchestra is joined by pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard to perform Bartók’s Piano Concerto No.3. The programme is bookended by works by two of the most beloved composers of the classical and romantic eras respectively: Mozart’s G-minor Symphony No. 40, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3, Eroica.

Basel Chamber Orchestra

Angela Hewitt will play and direct two masterpieces with the Basel Chamber Orchestra, Mozart’s lyrical Piano Concerto No. 14 and Bach’s Piano Concerto in D Minor. The concert will also include Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony, an orchestration of his searing and memorable String Quartet No. 8, and Vaughan William’s Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis.

National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine

In the midst of the country’s devastating humanitarian crisis, the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine is still determined to share its music with audiences across the world. In its first tour of the UK in over 20 years, the Orchestra visits Cadogan Hall for the first time. Chief Conductor of the Orchestra Volodymyr Sirenko will be joined by rising star Oleksii Semenenko. A programme of Strauss’ Don Juan, Bruch’s Violin Concerto and Sibelius’ Finlandia will conclude with Borys Lyatoshynsky’s Symphony No. 2 – a moving score that draws on folk melodies and Orthodox chant.

Symphony Orchestra of India

The Symphony Orchestra of India presents two concerts this season, including the London premiere of Zakir Hussain’s Triple Concerto for tabla and orchestra, conducted by Alpesh Chauhan and with the composer himself as soloist. For this performance, Hussain will be joined by Rakesh Chauraisa and Niladri Kumar. The programme will also feature an orchestral suite of Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier and will conclude with Stravinsky’s brightly coloured Petrushka.

Opera conductor and Wagnerian Richard Farnes joins the Orchestra for its second performance on Friday 8 December, which will feature the profound and emotive music from Wagner’s Parsifal Suite. Before audiences embark on Wagner’s musical epic, they venture to the Death Star with John Williams’ Imperial March from Star Wars and explore the complexities of Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 2 with Pavel Kolesnikov.

Arcangelo Ensemble

Virtuosic classical guitarist Miloš Karadaglić joins the Arcangelo Ensemble, conducted by Johnny Cohen, for a performance of Baroque masterpieces by Vivaldi, Marcello, Bach, Pachelbel, Rameau and Couperin. This evening promises well-known and hidden gems from the chamber repertoire, including Vivaldi’s Largo from Guitar Concerto in D Major, Rameau’s The arts and the hours, Couperin’s Mysterious Barricades and Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 amongst others.

Strasbourg Philharmonic

Making its debut at Cadogan Hall this February, the Strasbourg Philharmonic will perform masterpieces from the French repertoire including Berlioz’s Roman Carnival Overture, Franck’s Le Chasseur Maudit and Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite and Le Valse under the baton of Marko Letonja. The Orchestra will also be joined by Nikolai Lugansky for a performance of Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2.

China Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra

Musical excerpts from Tan Dun’s score for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon performed by cellist Jiapeng Nie and the China Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra open their debut performance at Cadogan Hall, as part of its first UK tour. Following this exciting performance, the Orchestra and its conductor Daye Lin are joined by Tamsin Waley-Cohen in two works for orchestra and violin, Chausson’s Following this exciting performance, the Orchestra and its conductor Daye Lin are joined by Tamsin Waley-Cohen in two works for orchestra and violin, Chausson’s Poème and Saint-Saëns’ Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso. The concert concludes with two monumental tone poems by Respighi: Fountains of Rome and Pines of Rome.

Orchestre de l’Entente Cordiale

In celebration of a new, cordial phase of Anglo-French relations, a group of young British and French musicians have been brought together to form the Orchestre de l’Entente Cordiale marking the 120^th anniversary of the Entente Cordiale treaty. In its first performance at Cadogan Hall, the Orchestra are led by Music Director Jan Latham-Koenig and joined by cellist Laura van der Heijden. An expanded orchestra of young musicians will also see eclectic instrumentation, including a foghorn, revolver, lottery wheel, slapstick and typewriter featuring as part of the collective music-making. The programme celebrates composers from both sides of the channel, opening with two works by Elgar, Pomp & Circumstance March No. 4 and Cello Concerto, followed by works inspired by dance and movement, with two Gymnopédies and Parade by Satie, Debussy’s Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune and Poulenc’s Les Biches Suite.

Dresden Philharmonic

In the opening performance of its UK tour, the Dresden Philharmonic, under the baton of Stanislav Kochanovsky, will perform a memorable programme of works by Mussorgsky, Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky. Violinist Maria Ioudenitch interprets Shostakovich’s profound Violin Concerto No. 1, and the Orchestra offers renditions of the Prelude to Khovanshchina by Mussorgsky and Tchaikovsky’s tragic Symphony No. 6, ‘Pathétique’.

Czech National Symphony Orchestra

The Czech National Symphony Orchestra returns to Cadogan Hall with Music Director Steven Mercurio to present a programme exploring musical landscapes, beginning with the lustrous countryside of Copland’s Appalachian Spring, contrasting with Smetana’s symphonic poemThe Moldau, from Má vlast. Mark Bebbington joins for Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5, ‘Emperor’, and the concert draws to a close with Dvořák’s epic Symphony No. 8.

Flanders Symphony Orchestra

The international orchestra series will draw to a triumphant end with the Flanders Symphony Orchestra, who will be joined by the Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus for a performance of Mozart’s Requiem. Kristiina Poska will conduct the programme, which begins with the dramatic overture from Don Giovanni and explores the musical jokes of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8.
